Cheltenham Bournside School students celebrate "best ever GCSE results" in line with the top 20% of schools in the country
Today Cheltenham Bournside School is celebrating its best ever set of GCSE results with average grades matching targets set for the top 20% of schools in the country. The number of students gaining a grade 5 or above including English and Maths was also the highest the school has ever achieved.
Headteacher, Steve Jefferies, said “Our students and staff have worked tirelessly to achieve these fantastic results. Students continued their studies in school with their teachers right up to the last full exam and teaching staff provided a huge number of revision sessions before and after school.”
“Of course, most importantly, the high quality of teaching in classroom lessons, the work of our dedicated support teams, the diligence and determination of students and the support of parents and carers have all contributed to this success.”
“Whilst I’m delighted at the school’s overall results, today is all about the individual achievements of our students and it’s great to celebrate with students like Ruby who gained the equivalent of nine GCSEs at grade 9 (with the tenth a grade 8!), Poppy (eight grade 9s and two grade 8s), Eleanor who gained ten GCSEs graded at 8 or above and Kady, Tahmid, and Oliver who gained nine GCSEs at grade 8 or above.”
Ruby, from Hatherley, achieved an amazing 8 grade 9s and 1 grade 8 as well as a Distinction in Health and Social Care.
Ruby is now going on to study French, German, Maths and Psychology and hopes to study languages at university and work as a translator in the future.
Poppy, from Hatherley, opened her results to see an incredible 8 x grade 9s and 2 x grade 8s.
Poppy is going on to study Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology at A Level.
“I’m so pleased! The science department has been amazing, especially Mr Evans and Miss Wilkinson. Their support and dedication is impressive. In the future I want to be a vet. I can’t see myself doing anything else. For university I like the look of Bristol or Nottingham.”
Tahmid, from Hatherley, achieved 4 fantastic grade 9s in Maths, Religious Studies, Physics and Sociology, as well as 5 grade 8s and 1 grade 7.
Tahmid is going on to study Maths, Economics, Philosophy and History at Sir Thomas Richards.
“I’ve really enjoyed Bournside, the teachers are so nice. In the lower years PE was my favourite subject but now it’s Maths. After A Levels I’d like to go to university to study Financial Management. Which one? The best one!”
Rose, from Hatherley, was smiling having achieved an impressive 3 grade 9s in Chemistry, Physics and Spanish as well as 4 grade 8s and 3 grade 7s.
Rose will continue to Cheltenham Bournside Sixth Form to study Chemistry, Physics and Spanish at A Level.
“I’m so pleased! I love science and I wanted to study to ‘sparkly’ side of science at A Level and I chose Spanish because I think it offers valuable transferable skills for the future. After A Levels at the moment I would like to study Chemistry, perhaps at the University of Birmingham as I would like to stay at home. In the future I’d be interested in making diamonds - taking carbon from the atmosphere to them! Or work in sustainable cosmetics. To be decided!”
Harry, from Leckhampton, achieved a fantastic grade 9 in Physics and 5 grade 8s, as well as a grade 7, 6, 5 and 4.
Harry is coming back to Cheltenham Bournside Sixth Form to study Maths, Physics and Computer Science.
“I’m pleased with my results and will be coming back to continue Maths, Physics and Computer Science at A Level. I know Bournside well and have great friends here. After Sixth Form I’d like to study engineering.”

Laura is going on to study A Levels in History, English Literature and Politics.
“I’m really pleased. I loved Bournside, especially all the extra-curricular opportunities. I’ve been really involved with music and the debating club, which is great, as I’ve been thinking recently about a future career in diplomacy. I’m looking forward to studying History, English Literature and Politics at A Level and after that I would like to study History at a Russell Group university.”
Julia, from Charlton Kings, was celebrating a strong set of results with 3 grade 9s in English Language, History and Religious Studies, 1 grade 8, 2 grade 7s and 4 grade 6s.
Julia is going on to study A Levels in History, Spanish, Philosophy and Ethics and Criminology at Bournside Sixth Form.
“I’m very happy! I’m coming back to Bournside Sixth Form because the teachers are really good and I think it is a great environment here with a nice atmosphere. After Sixth Form I’d like to go to university to become a barrister. I have been looking at the University of Nottingham. Today though, I’m going to celebrate by relaxing after the stress of the exam results!”

I have enjoyed DT and Physics the most at GCSE and I think Bournside is great because of all of the people here and the strong community. After A Levels I’d like to study mechanical engineering. I’ve always loved theme parks - Alton Towers is the best - and I want to design rollercoasters!”
