Happiness lecture

Eight of our A level biology students had the opportunity to hear a lecture given by Lord Robert Winston at Cheltenham College in February. The private lecture entitled ‘Can science make you happy?’ looked at the rapid development of the human brain since our use of stone hand axes 1.5 million years ago.

In an entertaining and illustrated talk, Lord Winston showed how ideas, communication, intelligence and thus the emotion of happiness are now being more understood with increasing knowledge of how the brain works.

Freddie in year 12 said: “I found it very interesting and stimulating! I have never considered anything about the science behind happiness and hearing the professor talk about his numerous experiments was extremely interesting, showing us how biology can be applied to everyday situations.”

Lord Winston is Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London.
