Bournside scoops School Games Award

We are proud to be presented with the Level 2 Secondary School Participation in the School Games Award 2018 at the Gloucestershire Active Schools Award Ceremony at Cheltenham Town Hall on Thursday 13th September, beating off strong competition from secondary schools across the county.

The school games level 2 competitions give our pupils the opportunity to participate and represent the school in a wide range of non-traditional sporting activities. At Bournside, pupils have taken part in a variety of individual sports such as badminton, table tennis and indoor rowing and our girls’ football team made it past the level 2 competition and through to the Level 3 county finals.

One of our most popular school games sports has been handball, where our year 8 and 10 boys and girls competed at the level 2 district championships and went on to win bronze and silver medals at the county finals at Cheltenham College. As well as offering an opportunity to compete against other local schools, the variety of sporting opportunities sees a host of pupils playing sport for fun and enjoyment, who may otherwise not include themselves in the more traditional sports.

Head of Physical Education, Gareth Taylor, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the school and I am so proud of all the pupils who have continually challenged themselves over the last year. At Bournside, we strive to give our pupils the very best opportunities to excel in sport, and we are lucky to have some very committed members of staff, not to mention fantastic facilities to make this possible.

“We’d like to give a huge thank you to Josh Hanley and the School Sport Network for organising and delivering the Cheltenham School Games Programme.”
