Headteacher’s Blog – February 2018

The New Year is now well under way and our students have begun 2018 with real enthusiasm for their learning, both in lessons, but also in clubs and activities taking place outside the classroom.

I would like to begin my blog by offering my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the recent school production ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.

As many of you witnessed first-hand, the individual and collective performances were absolutely superb and showcased such high quality theatre. It was particularly delightful to see some of our year 7 students performing alongside our sixth form students, across four consecutive nights, each in front of a packed audience in our main hall. As I shared with the cast and audience at the end of the penultimate show, the entire production crew created palpable excitement throughout the school in the days leading up to and including the production, which was so exhilarating. I would like to pay particular thanks to our highly committed group of staff who led this year’s production and who have been working tirelessly after school and at weekends in the lead-up to this year’s shows.

I would like to draw your attention to two forthcoming opportunities for you to engage with the school. First, a parent survey has just been made available to all parents/carers of students at our school. This represents an excellent opportunity for you to provide me with feedback regarding your views about our school. The short online survey, which can be completed anonymously, provides you with the opportunity to share your views on particular aspects of our school and how you feel we can work to better support your son/daughter. I would very much encourage you to complete this survey, which consists of ten questions and will take around five minutes to complete. To do so, please simply click on the link below. The survey will remain open until 3:00pm on Friday 23rd February.

Parental surveyFollowing the completion of this survey, I will work with my Senior Leadership Team to analyse the responses and report back to all parents/carers.

Secondly, following my previous blog in November, I am delighted to share with you that the inaugural ‘Friends of Bournside School’ meeting has now taken place and was attended by over ten parents/carers and two members of staff. The aim of ‘Friends of Bournside’ is to bring together our community – parents, carers, family members and those in our local community – through social events at the school and offer opportunities for fundraising. This steering group discussed a range of events and please keep an eye on our website and bulletin over the coming weeks and months for more information about these.

Following the first set of academic reports to our students in December 2017, I awarded four students in every year group a Headteacher’s commendation for ‘outstanding attitude to learning’. These 28 students were congratulated by me in their year group assembly and awarded a Bournside lapel badge in recognition of their achievements.

These awards, which represent the first of their kind, are awarded three times per year and follow each of the school’s three formal reporting windows. Whilst there were a large number of students in each year group who were also recognised by their Heads of Year for their excellent effort, these students represent the four in each year group who have stood out as being exceptional in terms of their attitude to learning and the high level of determination, perseverance and contribution that they make towards school life. Many congratulations to each of them.

As always, there are a number of events scheduled to take place at school between now and the Easter break and I would like to draw your attention to a few of these:

Best wishes,

Gareth Burton
