Head of Sixth Form’s Blog – September 2018

Welcome to a new year in the Sixth Form! After a fantastic set of A-level results this summer, which saw us equalling our highest ever Level 3 Value Added score, the new Sixth Form year has certainly started with pace and purpose. The summer enrolment has resulted in our highest number of students join year 12 for several years, with many students progressing from our own year 11, but also from other schools locally and nationally. It has been a pleasure seeing these students settling in to school life, and it was lovely to welcome so many parents to the Year 12 Expectations Evening that took place on Monday 10th September. I am thrilled that year 12 are settling into the routines of sixth form life and their new chosen subjects. There certainly is a palpable ‘buzz’ around the Centre with increased student numbers and a student body who are excited about the year ahead.

Our year 13 students have returned to their second year of A-level study with a clear dedication and commitment; already we have noticed increased numbers of students starting early and staying late. Many of our students are busy preparing their personal statements for submission to their E4L tutor. Already on the student’s radar should be the December Mock exam period. This will come around quickly and students should be getting quickly back into good study habits early in this term.

With the introduction of the new careers ‘Gatsby Benchmarks’ for all schools, we are keen for students to keep their eyes on their future; and for students to own their journey with, and beyond us. To support them with this there will be a number of careers events across the year starting with the National Apprenticeship show on October 4th for all year 12 students. This will be quickly followed by the annual Careers Fair that all students can access on October 18th.

It was great to see so many students support our first Sixth Form charity event of the year, with numerous students and staff ‘donning their denim’ for the Jeans for Genes charity day on Friday 21st September.

As the term progresses I will update my Blog to keep you informed of things that are happening in and around the sixth form. The term is sure to be a busy one!
