On Thursday 12th October Bournside School held their hugely successful annual careers fair. Over sixty universities, colleges, employers, apprenticeship and training providers set up stalls and welcomed over a thousand young people of all ages and their parents to discuss future careers, further and higher education. The evening started with a “which way now” talk looking at the options post year 11 for those considering employment or apprenticeships. UCAS gave a talk about applying to University, whilst Cirencester and Gloucester College discussed life in an FE college. Later in the evening, Worcester University also gave a detailed presentation about why students might apply for higher education. The school was a hive of activity as presentations were attended across the school site.
The universities available to talk to youngsters included Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Cardiff Metropolitan, Birmingham, Royal Agricultural University, Oxford Brookes, Portsmouth, Bath Spa, Plymouth, Swansea, University of Law Bristol, University of Gloucestershire, Loughborough, Harper Adams, UWE and Worcester.
Employers on hand to give advice about their respective industries included Endsleigh, Kohler Mira, Airbus, Nicolas White hairdressing, Harrison Clark Rickerbys, GE Aviation, Crowe Clarke Whitehill, Delphi Diesel systems, Hollingsworth & Vose, Ultra Electronics and Safran Messier Bugatti Dowty.
The Army, Royal Air Force and Gloucestershire Hospital NHS Trust represented careers in the public sector, together with Job Centre Plus, with Projects abroad and Pod volunteers for those students considering a gap year.
SGS Stroud, Young Gloucestershire, Prospects training, Hospitality training, Bridge training, The South West Apprenticeship Company, Orchard Cookery School and Cheltenham Town Futsal discussed apprentices and other training opportunities.
It is a huge undertaking to get so many providers at the school together on one evening, and has been months in the planning by the school’s careers team. It is a valuable opportunity for our local community with invitations extended to all students in Cheltenham and the surrounding area.
